About the Exhibit

The curation team has assembled a collection of pieces that represent common challenges artist face when creating. The goal of exhibit is to highlight the complexities in art production, collection, and patronage. The selection of art comes from engagements that did not pan out as expected. Through discussions and workshops, the curation team and participating work to identify solutions for business challenges that impact the artist community.

Exhibit Programming

Just Say Something

Artists commonly deal with mental health challenges but may not know how to manage. For some artists, large and complex projects may be overwhelming. That stress can turn into missed deadlines, broken contracts, legal trouble, and weakening reputation. In April, our team will hold a workshop that explores common tools for mental health management, stress management, project management, and communication.

Can I Get an Invoice?

Patrons, Collectors, and Gallery Systems frequently buy from each other. This level of business typically has more structured expectations; in the end, each group understands the value of an art piece and how that value is structured on an accountant’s ledger. In May, our team will lead a discussion on business registration and licensing processes in the DMV and explore tools and practices that communicate and exude professionalism.

One Man’s Trash…

Many artists would rather shutter a project that isn’t “perfect”. Some won’t apply to residencies, art shows, grants, or similar competitive programs if they don’t feel “ready”. Some artists would dispose of art they thought inferior while a collector would deem it a masterpiece. Much of what goes into growth as an artist is creating, exhibiting, and networking. In June, our team will host a workshop dedicated to understanding Washington, DC’s grant process and discussing ways to manage creative inventory.
